What’s the Buzz About the Soon-to-be-released Nokia N96 Mobile Phone?

On the third quarter of the year 2008, the Nokia N96 – which is the successor of the successful Nokia N9 and Nseries – is set to be released.
As the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer, it is quite easy for Nokia to come up with innovative designs and a line of mobile phones to suit a particular lifestyle.
For example, the Nokia Eseries is a line of mobile phones with enhanced connectivity and business application features. The target market of this line of mobile phones is business users.
Now, with the Nokia Nseries, it is actually a line of multimedia smartphones. The idea is to offer the modern mobile user digital multimedia services. This includes music playback, video, enhanced photography, Internet services and mobile gaming.
For these applications, high-speed wireless technology such as 3G, wireless LAN and HSDPA are used.

Nokia N96 Review
Despite the fact that the Nokia N96 is yet to be released on the third quarter of the year, some reviewers got the first dibs on the pre-production models. According to the Nokia N96 review online, the phone is lighter and slimmer than its predecessor which is the Nokia N95.
As compared to the other phones from the Nseries, the Nokia N96 has a better overall design quality. It has a 2-way slide just like the Nokia N95, but the features are much improved and sleeker-loooking.
Also, the first feature which has a great difference from the previous models is the internal memory. The Nokia N96 has 16GB of memory, twice the size of the Nokia N95 units.
The features of the Nokia N96 mobile phone includes:
- 3G and WLAN access
- GPS navigation
- Mobile television (depending on the network)
- Full HTML browser
- 5-Megapixel camera
- VGA camera in front for video calling
- Double LED flash
- 3G video calling
- Built-in motion sensor
The camera is the highlight of the Nokia N96. Aside from the improved resolution, it also uses the crystal clear Carl Zeiss optics Tessar lens. It comes complete with auto focus and auto exposure features. When you add to that the dual LED flash, this is one nifty camera and all-in-one phone to have.
If these features will all be incorporated in the actual Nokia N96 to be released on the third quarter of the year – then it is a definite improvement.
As compared to the previous designs of the Nokia Nseries phones, the Nokia N96 has a better camera resolution, more internal memory, as well as a lighter and sleeker design.

Nokia N97 + 5800XM + E75 Keyboard Shootout

The Nokia N97. The 5800 XpressMusic. The E75. Three phones, three distinct little keyboards. Does the N97 deserve the flak it’s taken for the mushy QWERTY? The 5800XM on-screen keyboard sucks, right? And how does the E75 stack up in all of this?
To find out, I conducted a little “keyboard shootout” experiment, pitting me, typist of 20 years (give or take 10 years) in one corner, against a stopwatch and the phrase “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.” in the other. To measure real-world time, the entire phrase had to be completely correct before I would end each trial.
Let’s see how it all turned out.

The Set Up

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic: Offline profile, touch screen vibration Level 1, touch screen tones Off
Nokia N97: Offline profile, no other changes
Nokia E75: Offline profile, no other changes
Nokia E66: Offline profile, T9 prediction on, keypad tones Level 1
I used the XNote Timer XP utility as my stopwatch. Each time trial went like this:
- Pick up phone
- Clear text on screen
- Hold phone in ready position above keyboard
- Hit Spacebar with right pinky to activate stopwatch
- Type in phrase “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.” as fast as possible, correcting any and all mistakes.
- Hit Spacebar with left hand to stop the time.
- Switch to next phone and repeat five times for each
I also ran ten trials using a Nokia E66 (with T9 on) and a Mitsumi brand PC keyboard for fun.

The Results

All times are in seconds.
Nokia E75 Keyboard
The E75 keyboard fared well.
Times: 11.95, 13.29, 12.25, 11.31, 10.93
Average: 11.946 sec – .5 sec* (see note at bottom)
WPM (Words Per Minute): 47.17
The best of the bunch, by far. The E75 has large, tactile keys that make it relatively easy to type stuff on a mobile phone. The kicker, however, is some quirky button placements – like the backspace key that’s next to the L key, or the Return key that’s directly under that. Still, 47.17 wpm on a mobile phone is quite respectable.
Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Keyboard
The 5800 XpressMusic keyboard: Worst of the Bunch
Times: 20.23, 17.84, 13.25, 17.73, 20.26
Average: 17.862 sec – .5 sec*
WPM: 31.10
As expected, the 5800 XpressMusic dominated the absolute bottom tier of keyboards (read: loser). Those damn on-screen keys are so tiny that it’s very easy to hit something other than the key you wanted, and the lack of multi-touch means that sometimes you’ll type a word too quickly and miss a couple letters in the process. In terms of raw speed, the keyboard wasn’t that horrible – but the number of mistakes I made (and had to correct) was. The only time I typed the phrase perfectly was the third run.
Nokia N97 Keyboard
The N97 keyboard proved to be the middle ground.
Times: 13.71, 16.29, 14.48, 12.68, 15.35
Average: 14.502 sec – .5 sec*
WPM: 38.56
I really thought the N97 would show some pretty low scores. Nope! It turns out the N97, if you get past the mushiness and generally weird bottom row, is not as bad as some folks (like me) may have you believe. Or maybe I was just having a good day. The N97 was only 18% slower than the E75, but it’s also smaller, squishier (hard to tell whether you hit a key or not), and personally more annoying to use. You be the judge.
Controls:
Nokia E66 Keyboard
The E66 keyboard was still a contender, even without a QWERTY.
Times: 19.14, 16.37, 15.12, 13.82, 12.01
Average: 15.292 sec – .5 sec*
WPM: 36.51
Shouldn’t QWERTY keyboards be faster than a keypad equipped with T9? At 15.292 seconds, the E66 control group beat out the 5800 and came close to tying the N97. I might have to rethink this keyboard thing…
Just kidding. This is mostly luck, because the only word I actually needed to scroll through T9 for was “lazy”. Apparently, “jazz” is a more popular word.
Mitsumi PC Keyboard
Times: 4.82, 6.09, 4.70, 4.40, 4.32
Average: 4.86 sec
WPM: 111.11
*Note that since I had to manually start and stop the clock myself, I subtracted .5 seconds from the average to calculate WPM. For the PC keyboard test, I ignored this because there was no real motion needed to stop the timer (I need to hit alt-tab, the right key, and space).

Conclusions

The obvious conclusion is that the E75 is the best keyboard of the bunch. That isn’t too difficult to see, since it has the largest keyboard, and the best feel, of the group. But the numbers are interesting: it was 18% faster than the N97, 34% faster than the 5800 XpressMusic, and 23% faster than the E66 with T9 prediction.
And just for fun, I did an E66 T9 vs. No T9 mini-shootout, with the results showing that T9 is about 36% faster than typing without it.

Visual Radio on Nokia Phones

Visual Radio is just one of those things that I find myself sputtering out from time to time with each new Nokia cell phone released. The problem is, I (and you too probably) don’t know a single thing about Visual Radio. What the heck is it?

Find out more in the full entry.

To put it simply, Visual Radio is just another tactic by the radio/music industry to get customers to spend more money. And as a side benefit it can also generate a lot of money for the phone carriers (Tmobile, Cingular, etc).
Visual Radio works with the integrated FM (AM has not been implemented in any phones yet) radio in your Nokia cell phone to display related information (say about the artist currently playing, or an ad, or something else) while the radio is in use. So you could be listening to The Killers and have, say, a picture of the album cover on the screen with information on the group and a link to buy the album. Sounds cool, right?

The downside is the information being transmitted to your Nokia cell phone goes through your wireless internet and therefore uses your monthly data allotment. And we all know how quickly wireless internet fees add up..
Another caveat is Visual Radio isn’t available everywhere. So far it’s good to go in the USA, Finland, Germany, Singapore, Sweden, Thailand, and the UK. However, other than KISS FM in the USA, I’m not sure what other radio stations support the application (Visual Radio requires a special server set up by the radio station). Not to mention that Visual Radio is only available for select cell phones. (however, almost every new Nokia phone has it integrated)

On the flip side, Visual Radio also allows for more of a “interactive experience.” Sure, you’ll be hit with a lot more ads, but you’ll also be able to vote for what songs to play, rate artists and new music, and chat with other listeners. It’s definitely more interesting than the car radio.

Nokia N90 Firmware v3.0535.4.3

After a 2 week hiatus, I received my “repaired” N90 phone in the mail yesterday. Sadly enough, the firmware was NOT upgraded to the latest (which is 5.05), but instead they left me with “3.0543.4.1.” And Nokia managed to crack a small piece on the top of the phone too. Damn it!!!
I’ve been fooling around with my new, cracked, N90 and I’m not noticing any fixes. The camera still takes awhile to open, that annoying bug that locks the camera in closed mode is still there, and the phone is still heavier than most bricks. I’m so ready to swap my N90 for an N92.
Here’s an updated list of changes for version 3.0543.4.1. (source: symbianfreak, with a lot of grammar mistakes fixed by me)

Phone Preview: Nokia N73 Phone

It’s Thursday, and I’m currently sitting here bored at work. So let’s do the final Nseries phone preview: the Nokia N73 phone. Call it the first candybar phone with Carl Zeiss optics.
Nokia N73 thumbnail

Nokia N73 Phone - Large
The Nokia N73 is a long-looking candy bar shaped cell phone rounding out the new Nseries line of cell phones. Like the N93 phone, the N73 has a 3.2 megapixel camera, Carl Zeiss optics, and another VGA camera. However, unlike the N93, the N73 does not have optical zoom – but it does have a nice lens cap. I should note that the N73 has dedicated camera buttons for camera mode, zoom, and picture review.
Back of the Nokia N73
Nokia has tossed away tri-band for the N73 in favor of (gasp!) quad-band + 3G. So we may yet see this phone headed to the States.
Like the other new Nseries phones, the N73 has an enormous screen – 2.4 inches. The screen looks ridiculously big compared to the size of that keypad.
Nokia is really pushing this phone as an easy-to-use camera (phone) with a lot of flashy, simplified features such as easy integration with Flickr (online photo galleries) and photo slideshows with sound. (the N73 has onboard stereo speakers)
Available in July 2006 in a variety of colors (“silver grey/deep plum”, “frost white/metallic red”, “frost white/mocha brown”), with no indication of retail cost as of yet.

Phone Preview: Nokia N72 Phone

Here’s the second of the newest batch of Nokia cell phones: the Nokia N72 Phone. Also known as the latest incarnation of the Nokia N70 – a phone that’s barely been out for a couple of months. (nice of Nokia to announce these phones now eh?)
Nokia N72 Thumbnail

Nokia N72 Phone Large Image
It’s a pretty stylish candy bar phone with a similar camera style to the N70 or 6680/6682 series of phones. There’s an “Active Lens Cover” which slides up and down to expose the camera lens. Personally, I would love to see this on every camera phone.
It seems as if the N72 is headed for everywhere BUT the good ‘ol US of A – it’s going to Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Russia, and Eastern Europe. Er…huh? So we’re stuck with the N70, and everyone else gets the new N72. The good news is the Nokia N70 is almost exactly like the Nokia N72. Both sport a 2 megapixel camera, Symbian, Bluetooth, and pretty much everything else that makes a Symbian phone, a Symbian phone.
The N72 does have one feature the N70 does not: “Digital Textures.” I believe that is Nokia-speak for “rounded rectangles” which the back does make good use of:

Hot damn: the Nokia N72 phone is expected to be in stores June 2006. Scary thought.
And finally, here’s a picture of the camera is action:

Phone Preview: The Nokia N93 Phone is No Longer a Rumor

Wow. Barely a year since the Nokia N90 debuted and achieved fame for being the biggest, heaviest flip phone to date, Nokia has (officially) announced the N93. A weird sort of hybrid between the N90 and the European N92 phone, the N93 takes the best of both worlds with more Carl Zeiss optics powering a 3.2 megapixel camera and hinge mechanism mirroring the N92′s.

Read more in the extended entry.

The Nokia N93 Phone
Nokia N93 Phone
The Nokia N93 phone is one of the three newest Nseries phones announced today (the others being the N72 and N73 multimedia phones). It’s a Series 60 triband (900/1800/1900) phone with 3G and WLAN/wi-fi support.
Nokia really pulled out all the stops on this phone. The camera’s what I would term “godly,” with the ability to take 3.2 megapixel (2048×1536 resolution) photos and record video at an impressive 30 frames per second. The N93 also sports 3x optical zoom, one of the first instances that we’ve seen on a Nokia phone, and image stabilization. It’s definitely nice to see that camera phones these days are starting to be comparable to digital cameras. Even built-in cameras on today’s cheap mobile phones can give low-end digicams a run for their money.
Looks a little like the Nokia N92, eh?
Here’s the biggest draw to the N93. A hinge that allows the screen to turn sideways, letting you watch videos in landscape mode without having to do some odd rotating a la the Nokia 6260. I should add that the internal screen supports 262k colors at a resolution of 320×240 (2.4 inches diagonal). For the external display, Nokia opted for a small, elegant color screen which I think is a huge plus.
Meanwhile, another “huh?” feature on the Nokia N93 is the ability to connect the phone directly to any tv. Apparently you can play games (huh?), use office applications, and etc on compatible televisions. No word on how this works.
As for expandable memory, the N93 phone uses miniSD up to 2 gigabytes. Nokia claims that this will hold 90 minutes of DVD-quality/30 fps video.
While Nokia has not released any kind of size information on the N93, from the pictures it looks similar in size to the N90 – with a couple more curves.
The Nokia N93 phone will retail for 550 euros, or $680 USD. Not as pricey as the N90, but still pretty far out of reach. Note that this is the retail price before phone “subsidies” or rebates.

Best Settings for Video Playback on Nokia 5800 Xpress Music
Nokia 5800 as the multimedia phones makes you able to enjoy watching the video and music with it. The question is, how’s to do to convert that videos and what are the best setting used for. I have convert many videos into my phone, I found that most video files can play with this phone such as mp4, 3gp, rmvb and flv files. But of them plays well but some are not. After many tries, I finally got the best results for Nokia video files. My video in 5800 was full screen, high quality and sounds very well. Here are my settings:
Video Resolution: 480*320
Video Bitrate: 768 kbps
Audio Bitrate: 128 kbps
Video Format: MPEG-4 (be sure not to use H264, as it’s not supported in the current firmware)
Audio Format: MP3
Audio Channels: 2 Channels
You can apply these settings above in whatever application you used when converting videos into 5800. Then I am sure you will get full screen, high quality and flawless video in your phone.
Settings for video playback on Nokia N97, N95, N85 and other Nokia phones.
Nokia N97: Video playback formats are 3GP formats, Flash Video, H.264/AVC, MPEG-4; the video resolution is 360*640. Audio formats are AAC, M4A, MP3, WAV, WMA etc.
Nokia N96: video playback formats are 3GP, Flash video, H.264/AVC, MPEG-4, RealVideo, WMV 9; the video resolution is 240*320. Audio formats are AAC, MP3, WAV, WMA etc.
Nokia N95: video playback formats are MP4, 3GP. Video resolution is up to 640*480, audio format is AAC stereo.
Nokia N85: video playback formats are 3GP formats, Flash video, H.264/AVC, MPEG-4, and WMV. The resolution is 240*320. The audio formats are AAC, M4A, MP3, WAV and WMA etc.
OK, I will not list all settings of Nokia phones. If you are interested you may get more relative information on Nokia official website.
How to transfer video files into Nokia 5800
I have download some videos from video website such as Youtube, Google video. But I can’t watch these videos in my phone. As these videos were flv files, Nokia 5800 can’t play such videos. I use Internet Tablet Video Converter to convert it, but it shows “Unsupported Video File Type”. Then I got to know Daniusoft Video file Converter that seems professional for Nokia phone, I free download its trial version and tried it, and it works very well. Below are what I do:
Click Add button to add video files from your computer, set your videos according to the above settings and select Nokia 5800 Video MPEG-4 format for your video. Then just click convert button to start the conversion. After the conversion complete, you may watch these videos with Nokia 5800.
Also you may get music from video in this way. But pay attention to the format. As Nokia 5800 support mp3 audio format, you should select “MP3 – MPEG Layer-3 Audio (*.mp3)”.
How to convert DVD files into Nokia 5800
Obviously phones don’t have DVD drives, so to watch DVD on a phone you have to convert it into a video file on your PC then drag it into your phone. I also follow the above settings and convert DVD files into MPEG-4 video with Daniusoft DVD Ripper software. the results are excellent.
After insert your DVD into the DVD Drive click the Open DVD button to upload DVD files on to this program. Click Settings button to set your videos according to the above settings I listed. Click Profile drop list to select “Nokia 5800 Video MPEG-4 (*.mp4)” format for your Nokia video. Then click Convert button to start the conversion. In few minutes the whole process will completed.
If you select audio format “MP3 – MPEG Layer-3 Audio (*.mp3)” you may also get music from DVD.
To transfer files into Nokia 5800
In the above tutorial I have explain you how to convert Nokia videos from DVD and other video files. Then you need to transfer these videos into your phone.
1. Make sure your computer and phone are both switched on. Also make sure your 5800 have a memory card in its slot.
2. Plug the small end of the microUSB cable into the phone’s USB socket, which s under a plastic flap in the top left corner.
3. Plug the larger end of the microUSB cable into a USB port on your computer.
4. On your 5800 it should ask which mode you wish to use. Choose “Mass Storage”.
5. Open the memory card window (probably called “Removable Disk E:”), drag your video files into the video folder.
6. After finished transfer files, do not disconnect the cable yet. You should make it safe to disconnect the cable. You may do this by click a small icon in the bottom right corner of the screen that appears when the phone is connected.
7. After you have made the device safe to remove, you can unplug the cable at both ends.
Some useful tips to make the Nokia 5800’s battery last as long as possible
Sometimes you may have to stop talking with your friend or watching videos with your phone as low power of your battery. It is more inconvenient if you are in travel and have no alternative battery. Here are some tips to make your phone battery last as long as possible when using telephone.
Do not switch the phone off. As switching a phone on uses far more battery power than simply leaving the phone on.
Shut down unnecessary applications.
Turn down the 5800’s screen brightness to the lowest acceptable level.
Switch off your 5800’s screen when not in use.
Use headphones instead of speakers when listening to music or watching movies.
Avoid using the camera flash unnecessarily.
Use 2G instead of 3G.
Switch off Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi.’
Ok, I have typed out all my thoughts about Nokia 5800 here. Hope my tutorial is helpful to you. And all the other Nokia 5800 tutorials and useful how-to information should come here! It is welcome
